“United in diversity” is the official motto of the European Union.
Kundera put in differently and stated that the european equation equalled the maximum of diversity on the minimum of space.
Yet, by these times of crisis: economic, social, political but also of identity, diversity appears no more as a strength but as a threat.
Mottos and ideas of great Men are quickly forgotten in order to satisfy the urge of nationalistic claims.
Diversity is our new scapegoat. So all different but also all alone.
Situations that have so long been discussed and debated upon in the past occur again: prosperity enhances human generosity and tolerance; crisis nurtures selfishness and “entre-soi”. How sad to think that human nature is so closely bound with economic cycles.
